FTP and the Macintosh

This little summary was written by a Macintosh technician and fellow KTP fan in New York. He wrote it in response to my ignorance regarding port specification in the FTP client called 'Fetch'. I hope you find it useful.

In order to access the KTP tracks on the FTP server, you must specify a port number, in this case number 42.

Any FTP client can handle port assignment. All you need to do on the FTP clients that don’t have a specific 'port' field is to add it to the end of the IP address with a colon. This gives you IP_number:port_number. Example: 192.168.1.10:42

This applies to the non OS X version of Fetch as well as any other Mac FTP clients that don’t specifically have a place for the port. Just put a colon and the port number on the end of the IP address.

HOWEVER... I found that the person who has set up this FTP server has used some characters in the file/folder path they should not be using and will cause problems for many people, not just Mac users. An example of this is the “#” symbol. Nevertheless, there is one particular Mac FTP client that handles this very well, though it does have its own issues too. This recommended FTP application is Transmit by Panic.

Transmit might as well be free, because even though it’s shareware and nags you when you start it each time, it is not limited or crippled in any way, and does not ever time out. It has a great, easy to use UI and is tolerant of things MANY other FTP apps have issues with. It’s available for OS9 and OS X as well as very old non-PowerPC Macs as well (68k machines).

The one problem with it is it will truncate (shorten) long file names to 32 characters so that it can accommodate the Classic Mac OS file name length. On OS X this is a real pain in the ass since file names can be 256 characters long. You wind up having to go back and fix the names of the tracks. I am fairly certain they will be fixing this very soon though.

Transmit is one of those FTP clients where you would add the port to the end of the address, so the address would be formatted as 24.67.123.138:42

Here is the direct download link to Transmit by Panic.

If, for some reason, you cannot use this client, try looking for other FTP clients at tucows or at download.com.
